🌸 Pregnancy Conception Calculator
Estimate your most fertile window, ovulation date, and probable conception date.
The fertile window, ovulation, and when conception most likely occurred
Conception can only happen in a narrow window each cycle, and that window is defined by two very different lifespans. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days; an egg survives for only about twelve to twenty-four hours after release. The fertile window is therefore roughly six days long: the five days before ovulation plus the day itself.
Finding ovulation
The reliable part of the cycle is the luteal phase, between ovulation and the next period, which lasts about fourteen days in most people and varies little. The follicular phase before ovulation is what varies. So the useful calculation counts backwards:
ovulation day ≈ cycle length − 14
| Cycle length | Ovulation around | Fertile window (days of cycle) |
|---|---|---|
| 24 days | day 10 | days 5–10 |
| 26 days | day 12 | days 7–12 |
| 28 days | day 14 | days 9–14 |
| 30 days | day 16 | days 11–16 |
| 32 days | day 18 | days 13–18 |
| 35 days | day 21 | days 16–21 |
Day 1 is the first day of bleeding. Counting from the middle of the cycle, rather than backwards from the next period, is the most common error and it pushes the estimate later than reality for short cycles and earlier for long ones.
Chance of conception by day
Probability is not flat across the window. Studies tracking hormonal markers find the highest chance in the two days before ovulation:
| Day relative to ovulation | Approximate probability |
|---|---|
| 5 days before | 4–10% |
| 4 days before | 8–15% |
| 3 days before | 15–20% |
| 2 days before | 25–30% |
| 1 day before | 25–33% |
| Day of ovulation | 15–20% |
| 1 day after | under 5% |
Because sperm survive and eggs do not, the window closes almost immediately after ovulation. Waiting for a positive ovulation test before trying usually means arriving late.
Signs worth tracking
- Cervical mucus. Becomes clear, stretchy and slippery, like raw egg white, in the two or three days before ovulation. The single most useful free indicator.
- Basal body temperature. Rises by about 0.3–0.5 °C after ovulation. Confirms that it happened, but only after the fact, so it maps your pattern rather than predicting this cycle.
- Ovulation predictor kits. Detect the luteinising hormone surge 24 to 36 hours before release, which gives useful advance warning.
- Mittelschmerz. A one-sided ache some people feel at ovulation. Noticeable for roughly one person in five.
Working backwards from a known pregnancy
If you are already pregnant and want the likely conception date, subtract 266 days from the estimated due date, or add about fourteen days to the first day of the last period for a 28-day cycle. The result is a best estimate within a few days, not a precise date, because the exact moment of fertilisation is not observable.
Implantation follows conception by six to twelve days, and home pregnancy tests only detect hCG after implantation. Testing before the day your period is due produces a large share of false negatives simply because there is not yet enough hormone to detect.
A worked example
A 31-day cycle beginning 4 October. Ovulation is estimated around day 17, so 20 October, and the fertile window runs from 15 to 20 October. The peak days are 18 and 19 October. If conception occurred on 19 October, the estimated due date is 266 days later, around 12 July.
Every pregnancy is different and these dates are estimates based on population averages. Your midwife, obstetrician or doctor, with an ultrasound, is the authority on your dates. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long is the fertile window?
About six days: the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. It is asymmetric because sperm survive up to five days while an egg survives under a day, so the window opens well before ovulation and closes almost immediately after.
Can I get pregnant during my period?
It is possible with short cycles. If your cycle is 22 days and bleeding lasts six, you could ovulate around day 8, within the survival window of sperm from day 5 or 6. It is uncommon but far from impossible, which is why period timing is not a contraceptive method.
How accurate is the calendar method for predicting ovulation?
Reasonable for regular cycles and poor for irregular ones. Even with a consistent cycle length, the actual day of ovulation varies by a few days between cycles. Ovulation predictor kits and cervical mucus tracking are considerably more reliable in real time.
When should I take a pregnancy test?
From the first day of a missed period for a reliable result. Testing earlier produces false negatives because hCG only begins rising after implantation, which is six to twelve days after conception, and levels take a few more days to become detectable.
How long does conception usually take?
Around 85% of couples under 35 conceive within a year of trying, and about 60% within six months. If you are under 35 and have been trying for a year, or over 35 and trying for six months, most guidelines suggest seeing a doctor.
Does the timing of intercourse affect the baby's sex?
There is no reliable evidence for it. The theory that timing shifts the odds has been tested repeatedly and has not held up. The ratio stays close to even regardless of when in the window conception occurs.
